This exhibit is out of this world! Just like most of America, I hadn’t heard the name “Isabel Toledo” until Michelle Obama wore one of her dresses to the president’s inaguaration, but after seeing this exhibit I can say I’m a die hard fan. The Museum at FIT has also done an exceptional job of curating this exhibit by showing the actual shapes of the patterns next to each completed dress. They also divided her designs up in different sections of “Organic Geometry,” “Shadow,” “Suspension,” “Liquid Architecture,” “Shape,” “Manipulated Surfaces” and “Origami.” Here are some pictures of my favorite pieces from the exhibit:

John Salibello is the creative genius behind the selection of antiques at his current antique shops on 60th Street.

In Brooklyn we may be afforded brownstones, large apartments and backyards (We the Free, itself, has a lovely little backyard!) but those of us who have lived in Manhattan know how limited space is. This is why I LOVE John Salibello’s use of reflection and light in his interior designs. He finds beautiful antiques and places them in a way that opens up the walls of interior space. John Salibello’s taste is also impecable. His choices are classicly sleek and elegant. Check out some of my favorite pieces now offered through John Salibello’s business:

This is such an awesome and great thing to do! Brooklyn’s very own “3rd Ward” ( an artist- run space on Morgan Avenue that does everything fantastically interesting from holding parties to exhibitions) is now holding a course on how to refinish and restore old furniture. It is 3 different classes that are 3 hours long and the whole package costs $225! It may seem like a lot at first, but it’s three classes and think of all of the great things you’ll apply the knowledge of this course to afterwards.

Kudos to “3rd Ward” for finding a way for people to restore things. There are so many times I’ve had broken or old furniture and thought “I’d really like to do something with this!”

Fore more info visit http://www.3rdward.com/3rdwardclasses/furniture-refinishing.html

Hearing about this class inspired me to look up some pictures of awesome refinished furniture. Check out photos of furniture that “Chroma Lab” has done.

“Chroma Lab” is based out of Boston and run by Alicia Cornwell and Tony Bevilacqua, two people who love color and recycling old furniture! Here is the description of their furniture from their website:

“At Chroma Lab, we restore and paint promising but neglected pieces of vintage furniture. The greenest piece of furniture is one that already exists, so we focus on adding a shot of contemporary color and design to the pieces we find. We bring each piece as close to new condition as possible, then we apply low VOC Benjamin Moore Aura paints for our finishes, and a special topcoat like polyurethane, varnish, or wax for added lustre and durability. Occasionally we’re able to salvage original vintage hardware, however, we usually replace it during our redesigning process. Each piece of furniture that Chroma Lab finishes is one of a kind; the one you see is the only one there is.”

You can see more of their work at their website  http://www.chromalab.net

The “Intersetcions Intersected: The Photography of David Goldblatt” 2 floor exhibit at the New Museum on the Bowery is riveting, profound and absolutely stunning. Here are some digital images of the prints now on show at the museum, but you should really check out the exhibit itself because the prints themselves are so large and powerful in real life that they draw  you in.
